people and kids playing on it. We were able to find some essential oil type stuff to put under my sinuses because I do like to breathe on occasion and my allergies are still not happy. We decided that it would be a good day to climb the Long John or Lange Jan in Dutch which is the bell tower to the New Church and abbey. It’s 207 stairs, but it’s been a while since we were climbing domes and stuff, this one was mild in comparison, but irregularly spaced and made stairs with a constant spiral to the left made for stops to avoid a feeling of vertigo. At
least there weren’t hundreds of people going up and down to contend with, but this is a tourist day and the town is full of people with maps, cameras, and taking tours on boats and horse drawn carriages. We got a great view of the city of Middelburg, including a view of the back of David and Margaret’s house and the surrounding area. You could see to the sea in just about every direction
which is finally a way to see that we really are on an island. We waited at the top for the church bells to
go off and they are not as loud in the bell tower as they are outside of
it. We expected to be deafened, but not
really that loud. We wandered through
the church afterwards and someone was giving a concert on their organ from the
1400’s which was nice to hear. Again,
another great day in a small Dutch town that is full of things to do, see, and
experience.
