We went to the wedding at the Des Moines botanical gardens which were beautiful and serene, but you know, it’s hot, in a greenhouse. So, I had a cranky kid on my hands who had to understand that if he dared to talk during the ceremony, we had to leave. We did have to leave to cool off some and Oscar
was angry that he couldn’t see the bride very well, but the ceremony was mercifully short and then he was able to come to the dinner venue. Poor Oscar, all he wanted was wedding cake, to play and to dance on the dance floor, but weddings are not designed this way. He had to sit through a buffet dinner that
took a while to work around the room, toasts to people he didn’t know, speeches, sermons, bride dancing with her father, groom dancing with his mother and so many delays until he was finally able to get a piece of cake and dance to a couple of songs before we left. It was a quick and dirty trip because we drove
straight home the next
day, with only a couple of stops along the way.
Oscar’s favorite stop by far was the “World’s Largest Truck Stop” on
I-80. We were skeptical at first, but
once you saw that it probably had the population of Canadian Lakes at any given
time, we were believers. Oscar got to
sit in big rigs in the showroom, got to see all the hundreds and hundreds of
trucks that were staying there and we successfully avoided having to go to the
truck museum that was on the grounds.
Oscar was able to get a big rig from there, but of course, they didn’t
have his name. Or a license plate with
his name, or a key chain with his name or anything else with his name. I know it’s not a popular one, but come
on….one Oscar in there wouldn’t hurt anything.
And who’s naming their kid “John” anymore? We got home late with a sleeping kid and two
parents who wanted to be sleeping, but were able to spend the next day relaxing
at home before going back to school and work, which was nice.
