The next morning we are going to try to see the changing of
the
guards at Buckingham Palace. It’s colder today, but not raining really when we leave the house, but along the way, we buy our first umbrella of this trip. And it’s necessary because we’re standing for quite a while at the Palace to find out that they are going to do a “quick change” because of the rain, no bands, minimal marching and changing. Well, that sucks. And even Oscar points out that it’s not as neat as Greece’s Evzones. We catch a
bus to a surprise for Oscar, Chelsea Football Club’s stadium. He’s so excited when we get there. It’s pouring rain, you can't even see into the stadium without a ticket to tour it, but the store with all the merchandise, the pictures and eating at the pub right there makes him so happy. You would think that we just met the team. The pub attached to the stadium had great food. Oscar ate a whole pizza and two scoops of ice cream, while we got his waffle dessert. John and I had great sandwiches that we split, one a
brisket barbecue and one a buttermilk chicken. They’re channeling their inner southerners here at Frank’s in Stamford Bridge stadium. From Chelsea, we get on a bus and then a tube ride to the National Library. Free and out of the
rain, also a collection of historical documents that are amazing. We get to see a Guttenberg Bible, lots of illuminated manuscripts, the Magna Carta, next to the Papal order to void it and handwritten notes and music from the greats, Dickens, Woolf, Mozart, Chopin, The Beatles, Ghandi. It was very nice and Oscar loved it because he got to put on some headphones and just listen to Alice in Wonderland while we looked around. Dinner at home again because pounds to dollar ratio on top of big city prices, along with cold, wet weather is killing us.
