We head to Carlisle Cathedral first and Oscar is given an I
spy
game to play and told he’ll get a prize if we find everything. He’s gung ho after the train I spy and John gets to wander around the Cathedral on his own and the tour guide opens up curtains to show him the painted panels that show Augustine of Hippo’s conversion and life. Oscar and I are able to find everything and Icongratulate the volunteer on the perfect game for kids. It’s hard, but not too hard and there isn’t all the things that made York Minster a nightmare for us. And the prize he gets for finding everything is a choice for him and he picks a great green keyring with a picture of the Cathedral on it. We thoroughly enjoy the entire visit to this church and everyone is so nice. You would think with all the virus problems, people wouldn’t want to interact with travelers at all….but no. From the cathedral, we move on to the Tullie House museum and art gallery and Oscar has a ball here because there is a ton of hands on things. He gets to dress up like a Roman soldier, a redcoat, and gets to play with lots of things. He learns about Reivers and I marvel again about the things that he is learning that are probably not appropriate. We enjoy the gallery, but there are no remnants of Hadrian’s Wall that we can get to near here. Which is the reason why we made this trip to Carlisle in the first place. Oh well. I told John that we’ll hike the entire thing next time we’re here…..Carlisle Castle is right outside when Oscar and I say goodbye to John which causes Oscar to cry because he doesn’t want daddy to leave. We try to find the old firehouse in order to make him feel better, and it’s not very impressive, but the shopping is. We head through several places and I’m in virus mode, there’s no hand sanitizer here either, but I get peanut butter and crackers, some Kleenex in case we get to Germany and need to stay in place somewhere. Oscar and I pop in and out of shops and malls, find a McDonalds and charity shops. We head back to the train station to
