Dettifoss

It’s not too far out of Myvatn to Dettifoss.  Another waterfall…..but

this is the biggest and most powerful in all of Europe.  So, we can see mist rising from a long way off.  Or we think it’s mist, in Iceland you can never be sure what is causing the smoke rising in the distance….geyser, hot springs, waterfall?  Who knows?  But it’s Dettifoss, and we start to see that there are two parts to the mist.  There is an upper falls and a lower falls where most mist is coming up.  We decide to
hit the upper falls first and again, there are the vague ropes and signs saying don’t walk too close to the edges that tumble down into the falls occasionally, but no other guarding of this natural wonder.  No admission fee or anything.  We hit the
bathrooms and hit the upper falls which are beautiful and an easy hike along nice paths.  We head to the lower falls and they are so powerful.  You can see the power and feel the rumbling of the earth with the amount of water thundering down into the
canyon that the falls have created.  There are rainbows everywhere from the mist and we try to walk to the ends of all the rainbows that are thrown up to find a pot of gold, but never get one.  We do run into Kim and Rodney here at Dettifoss on the far end of Iceland from Reykjavik.  Who would have thought that we would end up here on the same day and at the same time to run into each other on the path?  We get some

pictures together to celebrate running into friends and head back up to top path to see another view of the falls.  Here, they have put a ramp up to get people up into the majority of the spray.  It’s awesome to be up there feeling the mist falling on you and cooling you off.  Oscar decides that he thinks mist is the best thing there is and should be everywhere to cool him off when he’s playing.  The kid ain’t wrong,
but we thoroughly enjoy the time at this incredible natural wonder.
