I do find some bug stuff and we think we’re awesome until we enter
Myvatn to find that I have gotten after bite roll on stuff after a mosquito bite. Good job Jo. Also, we eventually find out that these midges don’t care about any bug spray anyway. They don’t bite, but they swarm and get in your ears, eyes, mouth andthe car. Oscar and I perfect a 3 count where I open the back door, he jumps in and pulls his legs in as fast as possible before I shut it. You need nets on your head to have any ability to see anything without misery and we passed those up a while ago. But
they apparently wait in the parking lots and like people and light colors. They don’t bother us when we get away from people in the lava flows trails, they don’t bother us at the geothermal area and we get to go to the bird museum that Oscar
wants to go to and escape them. John and I fight over who has to go in to the bird museum and who gets to sit out and look at the lake and drink a beer. Again, my kind of kids' museum. It's like Europe understands that kids want to go see train and bird museums and parents need a drink.
Myvatn is a wonderland of lava flows, craters, false craters, bubbling mud and birders paradise. There’s too much to see in a day and we have our first baths planned. We head to the geothermal part and Oscar gets
sick from the smell of sulphur. Even with his mask on, he says that he can’t stand it, so we have to go see it in waves because he’s scared he’s going to throw up. It’s strong there, but it’s also amazing there, so can’t miss it. We will just have to torture our son and realize that he's also not ready for Yellowstone. We are going to the baths that are just on the other side of the mountain from this and Oscar becomes afraid that he won’t be able to be in the baths because they’ll smell so bad. He almost starts to cry in the cafeteria because he doesn’t want to ruin the experience or be miserable. I keep telling him that people pay a lot of money
to go here and they wouldn’t if it smelled awful. We get to our respective shower rooms and head out to the baths which are awesome. Myvatn nature baths are like the Blue Lagoon of the north. They are filled with minerals, feel amazing on the skin, and are that dreamy, milky white blue. We only get two hours here, but love every second of it and leave wanting more. We’re glad that we have another pool booked for tomorrow.
