We head on to Reynisfjara beach where we’ve been told to be on the look out for sneaker waves that wash away tourists. Literally. This
is the first place we’ve been in Iceland where the signage around the beach makes it clear that you should never try to swim in the ocean, that you shouldn’t even turn your back on the ocean. So, we stand up on the beach to watch the waves because we’recurious about how this happens. It’s a calm day on the beach and still every few waves, there is one that comes about 20 feet higher up the beach than the others. We walk around the basalt columns, into the cave that is hollowed out there and around
the beach. There are artic terns in the clifftops and they are swooping around and it’s not until I pay more attention to the fat birds that are swooping around. They’re puffins! So, we stay and watch them hop around and try to fly and look all gangly in their flights and cliff perches. Puffins when we weren’t even expecting them, so check that off the
list too. We watch for a while and it’s misting, so we’re heading back to the car, but didn’t time the waves right to go past the basalt column. While we’re not in danger of getting swept away, Oscar and I both get out shoes and feet completely soaked by the rogue wave. So, great…..just what we needed. We see another waterfall and take a
picture of what we believe is Iceland’s tallest tree right beside it. There are some arched rocks and lava beds that we drive past on our way to our place for two nights. We’re finally almost back to Reykjavik and going to spend a couple of days doing the things that most people see when they come to Iceland. We check in to our beautiful room and get
situated, try to dry out the shoes and socks. We have a yummy takeaway from the restaurant here that is fresh bread and tomato soup. The perfect end to the day.
I had to come back and edit this post because I wanted to put in here that we have tried to find a song that comes to epitomize our drive around Iceland like when we have rented cars in other countries, but the only one to emerge has been a bastardized
version of the Weekend's Save Your Tears for Another Day that Oscar has been serenading us with nonstop across the entire country. He didn't even know it was by his favorite artist when we told him.....and he literally just sings "save your tears for another day, buh, buh, buhbabuh" over and over and over and over....
