getting back into the swing of things

I know I've been offline on our travels on this blog, but Julie and I have been developing a new website for travel at Wellness around the World   But, I have to be professional on that site and not myself in the same way I can here.  Like I talk about mindful delays there when our trains were delayed multiple times in Florida for Christmas.  In here, I can say how frustrating this was and how happy we were to just make it.  So, I'm going to go through the old posts from Bimini and Italy and post those.  So, these are travels that have already happened at Christmas and Spring Break, but we're about to leave for Alaska and that will be sprinkled in here too.....so, happy reading.

Not an auspicious beginning to the trip when you wake up to an inch of snow that has turned into ice on the freeway.  We left early because of the possibility of ice and passed a car upside down on 131, but still made it to the Schillims at about the right time.  We finally got our Uber and met them at the airport to find out that the plane was now delayed by two hours.  Oh, well.  It’s holiday travel in this day and age right? But, this was going to make catching our connecting flight out of O’Hare a 10 minute connection.  The American desk clerk had told the Schillims that they should be able to make it, but when I asked a different one about it, she said that we wouldn’t be able to make the connection.  They reissued us all new boarding passes for

the later flight out of O’Hare direct to Tampa.  We would have 5 hours to spend in O’Hare and get in to Tampa late, but we would still arrive there today.  So, we decided that it was the lesser of two evils and went with it.   So, we went through security and then started scrambling to figure out if the driver that was picking us up would be able to come later and if the Schillims could still pick up their rental car, check in to their Air BnB that late. and the guys sat down at Founders to have

beers.  We are officially on vacation, so drinking at 10 am is going to become the norm.  We walk around the airport and try to figure out things to do to wait for the plane.  It finally becomes time to board, but they’re boarding the flight to Dulles that we were supposed to be on before us.  American changed our flights from Dulles to go through O’ Hare, which I knew did not bode well for us and I was right.  So, we have to wait to get on a tiny plane at another gate to fly the one hour to Chicago.  Waiting in line to board, Dave notices that their “new” boarding passes don’t have the new flight out of O’ Hare on them.  Ours do, we leave at 7:15 now, but theirs are all for the flight that leaves at 1:15.  No one can help us at GRR and say that they have to wait to talk to someone at O’Hare and this is of course how they get screwed because the 7:15 flight is now going to be full when we get to Chicago.  We finally land past the time that our first plane was supposed to depart O’Hare and of course the next flight to Tampa is full.  The Schillims now have to have lunch quickly and then fly to Miami to catch another plane to Tampa.  They are still going to land before us though.  I’m not sure which one is better, waiting forever in O’Hare or lugging things on and off a plane another time.
