Leaving Springfield

With the decision that we didn't need to stick around Springfield just to go in the small room with the granite tomb of Lincoln on Tuesday, (and the Dana Thomas house that Frank Lloyd Wright designed never on the docket because it's closed on Mondays and Tuesdays) we headed out of town.  We have been trying to do this trip like we do our Europe trips and ask the locals for places to eat, things to see and the Dana Thomas house was on there, but, just like in Europe, things always seem to be closed at the beginning of the week.
We decided we had to have a Cozy Dog, which is birthplace of the corn dog on Route 66 in Springfield on our way to St. Louis.  We were surprised at how big these corn dogs were and the fries were "Varsity" like fries according to John.  Which means that they are smaller, handcut fries that are then fried in grease that has been the same for 30 to 40 years like the Varsity in Atlanta near Georgia Tech.   We were amazed at the "memorial library" in this little joint that we're pretty sure included a Jeffersonian Bible in an unlocked case!!!!
After filling our bodies with cholesterol that was a must because it's Americana and not eating poorly, we headed out to St. Louis.  These towns are surprisingly close together, so we were taking our time, stopping at anything that caught our eye like the Mother Jones Monument to "clean unionism" that had a lot of people from Southern Illinois area on it.  We decided that there are too many dirty unionists still in Southern Illinois to make it possible to have there when really this was probably where Mother Jones was from or they wanted it on Route 66.

We got a hotel outside of St. Louis for the night from online at our previous hotel because the coupon book was silent about this part of the trip and I like the Sleep Inn in Cave City, Kentucky.  This hotel said that it was in Collinsville-O'Fallon off US 50, but the map doesn't tell you that 50 runs parallel to I-64 even when the signs are saying that it is conjoined with I-64.  So, we had to do some extra driving to find this wondrous hotel, but after that were able to knock back a good bottle of red wine with a screw top  (love whoever decided that was a good thing) and call it a night with some relaxing.  It's amazing how fast your low back and the bottom of your feet get unused to standing a lot because I feel like I'm back to first days in Europe when you want a massage therapist trailing behind you for your feet.  Love to everyone, jo
