Old Sacramento

No more work for John, so today we head down to Old Sacramento

as a family and actually walk around and go in the stores that Oscar and I passed yesterday.  We have to find a new parking garage because there is an event today that means $25 parking.  So, we drive around and find one even closer to the old town.  We have walking around, getting free candy from the stores and watching buses disgorge students everywhere. We hit
a store that has Dr. Who merchandise which makes John happy and then a toy store with cars and trains, so he’s happy.  We’re making Oscar pick one of the hundreds to buy and take with us.  John says that these were the worst moments of his childhood, being forced to choose one of so many great choices.  He’s very empathetic when Oscar says “no, two” and “both”, but we still have to take it down to one choice.  We had a great lunch at a cafĂ© in the middle of it all and Oscar stole all my fries, which was fine because my turkey bacon panini with avocado took all my
attention.  I’ve also realized that you think you know what you are going to pay for food based on the prices on the menu, until they give you an amount that is twice what you were expecting.  That’s because they don’t include the price of the beverages on the menu and they are more expensive at times than the food it feels like.  $10 for my sandwich, $8 for
John’s and his drink, my drink and Oscar’s drink suddenly brings it to $42.  Really?  I think the tax here is also exorbitant and adds to the confusion.  We do hit the Railroad museum gift shop because the heat is starting to get to us and we’re all tired, we head out after this.  We head out to Vacaville because John has found a baseball card shop, but it’s a bust because they don’t have older cards.  I hit Once Upon a Child kids’ consignment store for California swag for Oscar.  I find a San Jose sharks shirt and John vetoes the 49ers shirt, but insists on a NASA astronaut suit.  I guess we have Halloween covered now.  A night in the hotel and packing up all the stuff that we have accumulated and watching Stanley Cup playoffs.  We’re going to chill in the room for the majority of day tomorrow and see if we can get back on east coast time somewhat.
