We get up for the better than usual breakfast in the lobby
(but still not as good as going to a restaurant) and head up to Davis to take
John to his conference. I have planned a
day at the playground for Oscar because it will make him happy and there is
nothing else that we need to do. We’re
on vacation right? The city of Davis has
the most awesome webpage ever with every park listed and every amenity listed
and pictures of them all. I plan to drop
John off and see which one is closest to us.
Davis does seem to be a warren of streets, so even though one that I
remember having good stuff is only 2 miles away, it takes us a while to get
there and I go past one entrance and end up at an elementary school near
it. Their playground is open though so
we start there. Then we see the swings
across the soccer fields and go there.
This is the big kids play area and has an old school merry go round that
most playgrounds have gotten rid of because they’re dangerous. Oscar loves it and keeps saying “round and
round” and believes that it is a bus because you know that the wheels on the
bus go round and round. Well, I’m frying
and sweating in the sun pushing this thing and this is not what I had in mind
at a playground. I pictured him playing
on his own while I saw in the shade and read my kindle. This is not happening and why are there no
kids here? We head back to the school
and have some snacks in the little shade that is available there, but now the
slides have gotten too hot to go down and I realize why there are no other kids
at these parks. It’s too freaking hot at
11am in the morning already. So, we head
back to the car (Oscar not happy at this point) and a mother on a cool modified
tandem bike with her daughter tells us that the library we’re standing in front
of is having lego days and we should come in.
So, we do and Oscar really gets introduced to the concept of a
library. We have been to Morton library
a couple of times for play groups, but he didn’t have a concept of a place that
had books in it like he does now. He
loves the new hotel we’re at because they have a lending library and there are
books we’ve been able to take up to the room.
We had to order books on Kim’s Amazon Prime account and have them
shipped to Eureka because he was getting bored of the two that we brought with
us. The kid loves books and this magical
place that has hundreds captivated him.
He played with the megablocks for a while and watched the other kids,
but then one child walked over to the books and that was it. We read books for the next 30 minutes. But at least it was cool and fun and we were
able to leave and go back to the hotel to fight about a nap and Oscar is
introduced to another concept that he has not been familiar with: traffic.
