Christmas Eve

We have a parenting disagreement on Christmas Eve.  Oscar has
Monkey Bread
made cookies for Santa and wants to put out carrots for the reindeer.  John still doesn’t want anything to do with the “lie” that is Santa Claus.  I have no problem in going along with what he is clearly learning at school.  I haven’t brought up Santa myself, but the kid wants  to write a list, ask the Santa at the library if he is on the naughty list and was crying that someone might have told on him at school which put him on the naughty list.  It clearly already means something important to him, so I’m fine

with addressing it.  But the parenting conflict actually comes when Oscar says that he wants to stay up all night to see Santa.  John and Nana immediately say, “no” and I say, “sure buddy, you just have to wait in bed”.  Both mom and

John believe that he’ll be able to do it.  I say, let him try.  I think that I remember being allowed to try to stay up to catch Santa and never being able to stay awake past midnight.  So, he gets in bed and is promptly asleep in 5

minutes.  The excitement of Christmas is too much.  I go to Big Lots to get some wrapping paper and try to get a few things for John, mom and dad.  But there is nothing that the 3 of them need from Big Lots.  I do wrap the clothes that we got in Georgia so that it can seem

like we have a lot to open and wrap the few small gifts that we did bring with us.  We also write out the letter from Santa saying that the big presents that Oscar put on his list had to be left in Michigan because that was easier for Santa and us.  So, hopefully, we’re covered.  Plus, Nana and Poppy have come on strong with a Mickey Mouse suitcase that will hold all of his Disney clothes and books that they got him.  So, we’re ready for a  great Christmas morning, which I know will be early since he went to bed so fast.  This year, Oscar will know that the sooner he gets up, the sooner he gets to see what he got….
