Losing your 7 year old in the Bahamas

We need more groceries and debate a day for  John and Dave to go back to the north island where the only ATM is by the Hilton. We’re hoarding enough money to get them there on the ferry and the taxi.  Our days start to take a pattern, we get some breakfast and watch the sun come up on our little harbor that our balcony looks out over, we go swimming and to the beach.  We try to do the tourist things.
We walk up to the Fountain of Youth that was supposed to be where Ponce de Leon missed his chance to find it.  We drink from the rusty bucket with so many holes that you can barely get a handful before it’s empty.  But we do it and get more supplies from the little market.  And after the 4th meal that we’ve cooked and cleaned up after, Julie and I remember why we like cruising so much more than being in a VRBO for a week.
Because everything is so close and feels so easy, we allow the kids to move back and forth between the condo and the pool, ocean as long as one adult is always at the water with them.  So, I don’t think anything of telling Oscar that he can go back to the condo where John is grading while we stay to watch the sunset by the pool.     About 20 minutes later, Dave goes back to the condo and Oscar walks up and says, “I think I made a big circle”.  He has been walking in circles around the other side of the complex because

he didn’t know which way to turn when he first walked out of the pool.  Dave and John come running up at about this same time because Dave has learned that Oscar never made it back to the condo.  Great parenting on display here folks.  Also, my kid was really chill about being possibly lost in a foreign country.  He said that he jumped behind bushes and stuff when others would come by in golf carts because “there are people that steal kids you know”.  Like someone is running around the Bahamas in a golf cart enjoying their vacation and wants to steal this 7 year old!!!!   But he handled it well and didn’t forget how to get back to the condo after that.
