I have a hard time articulating what I think about this musical. It was my must see of the summer and I threatened John with bodily harm if he didn’t get tickets for it while it was in Chicago and I’m very glad that we saw it. We laughed a lot, which is not normal
during
most musicals, we liked the songs and it was outrageous, but it was no Les Mis… I was speechless for a while after seeing it,
which wasn’t helpful because we needed to eat and we couldn’t find a
place. Wait, back to the beginning. We were able to
run into fellow Canadian
Lakes Players’ Gloria, Pat, Ann, and Ginny in the lobby because they had come
up to see it as well and waited for us.
Now, these women were in some very nice seats, by the orchestra, and
John and I were in the back. Back to the point that there was no actual seat
where one ticket was, they had set up a chair there beside the sound
equipment…Luckily,
even though this theater was very full, no one came and sat on the other side
of us. So, we were able to both sit in
nice seats and not be in the way of the nice girls behind us who were also in
seats that were not stadium seating
or off kilter from each other. We did take a look around the theater and I
was expecting something like the Fox theaters in other cities. This one was tiny. I was a little shocked to see how small it
was. I know Chicago has several
different theaters and this is just the Bank of America theater, but still.
So, the musical.
I guess that I was expecting it to be less like an episode of Southpark
and more like a Tony Award winning musical.
But, one of the reasons that it has been so successful is it’s not like
other musicals. Suffice it to say, I
want to hear the songs again, I thought it was erudite and entertaining, there
was some serious satire, and if you are a person who can take that put to
music, it’s freaking hysterical. It’s
also getting better the further away from it I get. A musical is always one of those things that
you leave and you’re in a stupor for a while trying to process and digest
it. Well, the Book of Mormon is a must
see for any satire fan. If you can’t
make fun of your beliefs, culture, and life, then, DEAR GOD, Don’t Go. Since there were no pictures, no recordings
of book or Mormon, you’re just seeing the top of the world pictures from the
Ferris Wheel at Navy Pier. Enjoy and
Love to everyone. Jo
