Victorian Ferndale and more

Today we were debating going up north to Orick, but they’re
calling for rain and James needs to deliver some firewood out Ferndale way.  So, we decide to head to Ferndale which is a Victorian Village and historic area.  There is also the best burger place in the world there, so we’re heading out that way to help with wood and get a good lunch.  We find a playground at the back of town and now, Oscar doesn’t want to leave this small area.  We were swinging, sliding and climbing around for a while and then gave him a promise of cows and places to run to get him to get back in the car.  We start heading out to Petrolia down Lost Coast way and I ask John
if he wants to offer some poor scientologists who want to escape if they want to get in the car.  The big place where they hide their people so that they can’t get away is in Petrolia and when we start up the road to Petrolia, we see why they have picked this place.  It’s like we’re on 36 again, up and
down, around and around and then we finally get to the private land, but then have an even longer drive all over this property up and down hills and through cattle pastures.  The land and the drive are beautiful and some place we’ve never seen in Northern California.  We get to the cabin down by the river and Oscar is finally allowed to run around.  And no one got sick.  Oscar was able to tell us the one time that it got dicey for
him and we pulled over.  I didn’t even try to put John in the back seat with him or it would have gone poorly.  We were able to pull up really close to the cows and while John must have said something that seemed like “food” to them, we couldn’t get them to moo for Oscar.  We did see one pooping and Oscar wanted to go back to see more.  I’m trying to explain that everything doesn’t work like the DVR and the ipad and you can’t just make cows poop on command, but the kid is raised in a technology age that doesn’t allow for
things that you can’t see over and over on demand.

Back in Ferndale we get burgers at No Brand Burger Stand where we ate 8 years ago when we last visited and had to have again.  So good.  Oscar has fallen asleep in the car and we leave him in there to eat at the picnic tables.  We head back into town to hit the art
gallery and find out that there are amaretto cordials at the little candy store in town.  When you find these, you have to get them.  We find several pieces of art and have a great talk with one of the artists who is there running the place.  I couldn’t afford the fiber art that I really wanted.  There were quilt pieces and cross stitch that was stunning and out of my price range.  We returned to the burger stand for fries for Oscar when he woke

and malts for us.  Oscar had a lot of John’s coffee malt which I didn’t expect him to like.  The malts were delicious though and we headed home with some amazing purchases and pictures.
